“Standing with Words”
With words, I stand before something vast.
On street corners, I perform with words and the body, and develop the events that arise there into
installations built around video, combined with sculptural objects and painting. Trying to put up,
on a street corner, a poster too large for one person to manage (poster, 2018). Asking citizens to
look after a garbage bag whose contents cannot be known (Carrying 100,000 Years on Our Shoulders,
2021). Handing out free drinks from a stall (FREE, 2024–2026).
Performed without warning in public spaces—streets, the forecourts of government offices, vacant
lots—these performances draw out the reactions of whoever happens to be there: indifference,
hesitation, intervention, participation, refusal. Through this practice, the rigidity of social structures,
and my own small place within them, come into view.
My work deals with problems that feel far away: distant wars, the situation of refugees, nuclear waste.
Living in Sapporo, Hokkaido, they can feel remote. But that distance may not be merely geographical;
it may be something I myself produce. The indifference I meet on the street exists in me as well.
Perhaps that is why I am interested in indifference. Why can we not care about distant problems?
Carrying that question, I try to transpose distant situations onto my own, and to take them on as matters
that concern me directly.
My work begins with the small act of one person. I believe in its lightness. There is a lineage of art that
has questioned the great forces of war and power, and the rationality used to justify them; I call this
lineage “an art history of resistance.” Inheriting its stance—facing human weakness, slipping humor
into seriousness—I choose small gestures that might change me, rather than grand gestures meant
to change society or nature.
And yet I doubt myself. I made nuclear waste the subject of a work because it might come to Hokkaido.
In that there is also the self-preservation called NIMBY: “Not In My Backyard.” I want to stand inside the
problem, not outside it; my work also carries the difficulty of standing there.
Nor are cities and society the only vast things I face. Walking an embankment with a signboard on
my back, battered by the wind (Carrying Words, 2021). Pressing my hands to a tree, wishing on and
on (Wishes to the Trees, 2025). Raising flags, again and again, where no one is (Planting a Flag,
2026). Faced with the vastness of nature, only my own smallness remains; in an anonymous landscape
that could be anywhere, a small body wavers—and just barely stands.
Works that give three-dimensional form to words themselves grow from the same question. Words take
on a body; the body becomes words. In recent years, my work has been moving toward this structure:
“the body of words / the words of the body.”
Words are fragile.
They may not get through right away.
The body is more eloquent than words.
But it is words that make the body stand.
Neither words nor the body can stand alone.
And so, in this foolish and terrifying world,
I stand with words.

Statement for the Exhibition Words Bridge Separate Worlds
Sculpting the multiface of language
Words and letters are the motif of my work.
However, I have to admit that I have never been good at expressing my work’s intention in language.
When people ask me why I work with words and letters,
I often mention my experience of studying calligraphy and my childhood dream to be a cartoonist.
But I could not explain any more than that and I had been searching for the right words till now.
Language is a bridge and a barrier to communication.
This duality is the fundamental reason for working with words and letters.
Language is like a bridge of communication for people that allows them to cultivate sympathy and to deepen understanding from one person to the next.
At the same time, language is like a broken bridge that destroys peoples’ relationships through language barriers or by the violence in language that creates division and disconnection.
Language can act as a connector and divider depending on how people perceive a message.
A message’s potential perception can range between dramatically different meanings according to the individual.
And this ambiguity is a very unique characteristic of language.
In addition, my curiosity about particular words and letters is intense and wide-ranging.
For instance, in calligraphy,
the experience of seeing the form and understanding its signification simultaneously as a viewer; a word’s changing and shifting meaning by region, generation and time; the flat design of characters; the onomatopoeia which imitates sound and feeling; the characteristic floating quality, where it seems to lose gravity, of kanji and hiragana when it is objectified three-dimensionally; the responsiveness between listener and speaker; and the synchronicity of words in translation.
In the past, I have extracted various of these and other elements from language to create works in sculpture.
But I realized that in order to work with complex issues, the work must also have a complex structure.
I learned through trial and error in preparation for this exhibition.
To connect the distant world with one's own.
To overlap the multifaceted nature of language and its individuality.
To critique the complexities of contemporary society from multiple points of view by dealing with the multifaceted nature of language.
These lessons will influence my future projects.
The world is plural, full of ups and downs, and a dangerous place to be.
That's my worldview. I try to build bridges, even when they are broken, even when they are destroyed.
I continue to work with a resigned attitude.
